Short-Term Rentals
All individuals or entities that own or operate a short-term rental in Buckeye Lake Village are required to obtain an annual Short-Term Rental (STR) license. A separate license is required for each unit (for example, a duplex requires two licenses). Licenses are valid from January 1 through December 31 and are non-transferable.
Short-term rentals are defined as any dwelling, unit, building, or room offered for rent for a period of less than 30 consecutive days.
The annual license fees must be paid prior to inspections. Once an STR annual license has been issued, owners and are responsible for collecting and remitting required bed tax.
Short Term Rentals in Buckeye Lake Village are governed by Ordinance 2024-22, Ordinance 2025-42, and Ordinance 2025-46.
Permit Process
- Submit Application
Complete the online application through the Village website or submit a paper application at the Village Office. At the time of the application you must submit:
- Proof of Insurance showing a minimum of $500,000 in liability coverage per unit.
- Electrical Safety Inspection report within the last 12 mos by a licensed electrician or certified home inspector. The report must inlcude inspector's certification number, description of inspection, any required repairs, confirmation the unit passed inspection after any necessary corrections.
- Listing Documentation showing the unit is registered on any hosting platform(s) (e.g., Airbnb, VRBO) and that listings reference Village regulations. Example: “All Short-Term Rentals in the Village of Buckeye Lake are governed under Ordinance #2024-22.”
2. Village Code Inspection
The Village Code Enforcement Officer will complete an inspection based off the IPMC Building Code Standards.

3. Install a Knox HomeBox
Purchase and install a Knox HomeBox near the main entrance of the unit. This must be installed prior to the fire inspection, and a working key must be available for placement inside the box at the time of inspection. Applications for the Knox HomeBox are available online HERE, printed HERE, or pick up a printed application at the Village Office.
4. Fire Inspection
Once the unit passes the Village Code Inspection, the Buckeye Lake Fire Chief or Fire Inspector will contact you directly to schedule the fire inspection and determine maximum occupancy. Please do not contact the Fire Department directly.
5. License Issuance
After passing the fire inspection, the Code Enforcement Officer will issue an annual Short-Term Rental (STR) license. The required window sticker will be available for pickup at the Village office and must be displayed in a front-facing window of the home prior to renting the property.
6. Bed Tax
After the annual STR License has been issued, monthly bed tax must be remitted to Buckeye Lake Village at 3% of gross monthly income. Monthly Bed Tax is due by the 15th of each month for the previous month. This can be submitted via the online portal or at the Village Office. You must supply the Village with monthly statements from your hosting platform(s) that supports your reported monthly income.
Noncompliance: STRs operating in Buckeye Lake Village without proper licensing or failure to pay bed tax will be subject to penalties listed in STR Ordinances: Ordinance 2024-22, Ordinance 2025-42, and Ordinance 2025-46.
